Toffee's story
Toffee has been FIP-free since March 14, 2024, but the journey to get here was anything but easy.
Toffee is a Persian cat born on September 8, 2022. He first became sick with neurological FIP in December 2022. Before we knew what he was suffering from, we went through several vet visits and even a stay at the clinic because his condition was so poor and he was having seizures. The vet said they suspected FIP, but they were not yet certain and needed to run more tests. They also warned us that if it was FIP, the outlook was not good.
We refused to believe this had to be the end, so we started researching online. That was when we found a Facebook group, where we received immediate help. We started treatment the very next day, and Toffee improved quickly. The therapy went very well, and we successfully completed it in March 2023.
But on September 7, 2023, just one day before Toffee’s first birthday, we were devastated when his condition worsened again. He had suffered a relapse, and this time it was even worse than before. For three weeks, we had to syringe-feed him. He was paralyzed and unable to move. He suffered seizures and twitching again, and his eyes were so badly affected that he lost his sight. Every night, I checked to make sure he was still alive.
We immediately restarted treatment, this time at a higher dose. As if the relapse was not enough, Toffee also developed resistance to GS. He was an extremely difficult case, and several experienced people guided us, discussing together what the best next steps would be. No matter how hard things got, we always had someone by our side with knowledge, advice, and support.
We were eventually given tablets in addition to the other treatment, and the combination worked wonders. Just two days later, Toffee slowly started moving again and even wanted to walk. Little by little, his eating improved too. We could hardly believe it, and we were so happy that we had never given up on him.
It was a long and painful road, but today, more than two years later, Toffee is still doing wonderfully. Sadly, he remained blind. He developed bilateral glaucoma, which is permanent, but despite that, he manages incredibly well.
We owe all of this to the people who supported us so selflessly during that time. Without them, Toffee would not be here today.
